Jeremy Clarkson’s interest in cars was sparked by his father collecting Jeremy from school, when he was just a boy, in a sporty version of the Ford Cortina.
Jeremy went on to say, “Always Ford Cortinas. That’s why I bought a Ford Cortina. I didn’t know there were other cars. I was raised in a Ford Cortina, only ever went anywhere in a Ford Cortina, so I thought I better buy a Ford Cortina then.”
When you sit behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang or a Ford Ranger Raptor you can feel your biceps swell, your six pack emerge and your testosterone go on the boil. They have a positive effect on your self-confidence and give you a devil-may-care attitude to life. It’s awesome.
Ford Ranger Raptor 2019
I recently had the pleasure of driving the 2019 Ford Ranger Raptor for a week. It was one of the best weeks of my year. I loved this car!
My kids who, like the rest of their generation, are intent on saving the planet, told me that the vehicle was not good for the planet. Ha! I said, because it is less harmful to the planet than Jeremy Clarkson’s old Cortina or any Ford Ranger of a previous generation thanks to its incredible bi-turbo 2l turbo-diesel engine that uses just 8.3l/100km.
Don’t be fooled by the small engine capacity because this incredible power plant delivers 157kW of power.
Everywhere I drove, the Raptor turned heads. My neighbour came to take look, people in the parking lots of shopping centres stopped to admire the bakkie and a couple of youngsters took photos with their phones.
The Raptor sits high off the ground – you sit head and shoulders above everybody else. Everything about this bakkie is solid – from the minute you step inside to cruising on the freeway to tearing along a dirt road.
I took the Raptor on an out of town trip that included freeways and some rather rough dirt road. On the freeway the Raptor has all that you need and expect from this generation of vehicle – cruise control, dual air-conditioning, heated seats, 10 speed automatic transmission, collision control etc etc
On the dirt, with the turn of a knob, I was in high range 4×4 and cruising along in the full confidence that corrugations, pot holes, berms and rocks would be no obstacle for the power, stability and strength of this bakkie.
The comfort level is amazing. Cocooned in leather, surrounded by every gadget needed to make the trip safe and comfortable and with the interior climate controlled just the way I liked it, I did not want to get out of the bakkie.
I was, at the end of the week, very sad to hand the vehicle back to Ford.
