‘Perpetual non-compliance to regulations by employers a cause for concern’

Seminar places spotlight on labour law compliance

A total of 41 notices have been issued to date to employers across the Free State for non-compliance as the Inspection and Enforcement Services Unit (IES) continues with its May month inspection campaign across the Free State province.

The campaign, which began on the 3rd of May 2021, has seen a series of inspections currently undertaken in Wholesale & Retail, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Construction and businesses owned by foreign nationals.

This is to test the levels of compliance by employers with various labour laws, register incidents relating to occupational health and safety matters and promote health and safety in the workplace.

As the campaign enters its third week, sixty-five businesses have been inspected and only twenty-four of these were compliant.

The notices served to employers were for contraventions of Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act, Unemployment Insurance Act, Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act, Employment Services Act, Compensations for Occupational Injuries & Diseases Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Provincial Chief Inspector, Manelisi Luxande, said: “These transgressions by employers across various sectors of the economy continue to be a cause for concern.

“However, the IES is determined to subject all employers to scrutiny in order to improve compliance with labour laws of South Africa”.

The inspection operations will continue beyond May.

Luxande further called on employers to observe compliance with labour laws or face sanctions from the Department of Employment and Labour.
