Health Minister: Vaccination remains best defense against COVID-19

In view of the recent resurgence of Covid – 19 cases and reported non-compliance with Covid 19 health protocols by some liquor outlets in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan, Eastern Cape Liquor Board is embarking on a compliance and enforcement campaign in various areas of the Municipality.

“The rampant cases of non-compliance with trading conditions by some liquor outlets in the Nelson Mandela Municipality may potentially contribute to the rapid spread of Covid 19 cases,” says Pumlani Fani, Senior Communication and Marketing Officer: Social Accountability Unit.

“The Entity is embarking on responsible trading and strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols campaign across the Nelson Mandela Bay.

As part of the campaign, various liquor outlets are being visited to check compliance with Covid 19 health protocols, but also educating liquor traders about the importance of adhering to health protocols in order to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus cases in the area.

“It deeply concerns us as the Regulator to receive reports of liquor outlets that have absolute disregard of health protocols put in place to curb effects of the devastating Corona Virus,” said the Eastern Cape Liquor Board Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nombuyiselo Makala.

“We wish to remind liquor traders that Covid 19 is still with us and it is now time that we are all vigilant by taking a collective responsibility to prevent the rapid spread of Covid 19 cases.”

The campaign entails one-on-one engagement with liquor traders on the Code of Conduct and educating them about their role in curbing the spread of Covid 19 pandemic in their business spaces.

Blitz operations in collaboration with SAPS and Metro Law Enforcement are being carried out to crack down on those liquor outlets that are not compliant with their license conditions.

The operation further includes identification of liquor outlets that sell liquor without valid liquor licenses.
