The Concept of Change in the Pocket

I often talk about what I call change in the pocket. This is a simple way to understand how we value people. Imagine someone like Idrisa. When I show her that I value her, I am putting money into her pocket, so to speak. Think of it like a bank account. You cannot withdraw more than you deposit without running into problems. The same applies to relationships. If you consistently give value, support, and respect, you build a positive balance.

    Depositing Value in Others

Every time I interact with someone, I have the chance to deposit or withdraw. When I act with care, acknowledge their efforts, or support them, I am depositing. When I am rude, dismissive, or self-focused, I am withdrawing. Over time, repeated withdrawals without
deposits can lead to a negative balance in the relationship, and that is when tensions arise. One small mistake might seem like the reason for conflict, but usually, it is the result of many withdrawals without consistent deposits.

    The Importance of Consistency

Consistently valuing people is crucial. Ask yourself, are you always depositing, or are you mostly taking? Some people walk into a room and instantly drain energy from others. Others leave the room and people feel positive, motivated, or lighter because of their presence.
Which one are you? Are you a giver or a taker? Leadership is not just about strategy or results; it’s about the impact you have on the people around you.

    Mindset Shapes Your Relationships

Your mindset determines whether you give or take. If you focus on valuing the people you work with, your family, or your team, it shows in every interaction. By consistently depositing value, you create trust, loyalty, and respect. Even when mistakes happen, people forgive
more easily because there is a positive balance built over time.

    Leading with Appreciation and Intention

Leadership is about more than titles or positions. It is about how you treat people every day. By understanding the principle of deposits and withdrawals, you can intentionally build stronger relationships. When you value others sincerely, you create a culture where people
feel respected, motivated, and inspired to give their best.
